Humans have a tendency to "play it safe". This probably comes from a hereditary need to stay alive in the face of bears and tigers.
However, in our modern age, the bears and tigers are often of the imaginary kind... they reside in our mind rather than in reality. This can get us to stick to routines and behavior we consider safe, such as not speaking out of turn, agreeing to the status quo, or not painting outside the lines.
Stuart Wilde tells us: "If you've never broken out of the status quo, then tomorrow do something nice and crazy. Do things to break up the binding rigidity that the mind imposes on you, and the fear it has of breaking away from the mold. The routine you are familiar with day-to-day is part of your ego's authority over you. By doing things differently, you begin to challenge its authority."
